In-depth Review: Darkstalkers Resurrection - Electronic Theatre

Added: 31.03.2013 15:18 | 9 views | 0 comments

Whether fans of the modern beat-em-up genre acknowledge it or not, they have a lot to thank the Darkstalkers franchise for. While Street Fighter maintained its status as Capcoms cash cow, it was Darkstalkers that allowed the company to experiment, to address alternatives and gauge the audiences reaction. It was arguably the welcome reception that Darkstalkers received that eventually led to the likes of BlazBlue and Arcana Heart finding their way to European markets helping to build publisher confidence and the likes of Skull Girls may never have existed without Darkstalkers unique brand of offbeat fighting mechanics. Surely then, this high-definition (HD) resurrection is long overdue.

Splitkick: Capcoms progressive approach to the Darkstalkers franchise back in the 90s continues to pay dividends with Resurrection. Beyond its inherent nostalgia value, players will still have a blast pummeling monsters into submission and its suite of modern features should breathe new life into this long-dormant series. Of the golden era fighting games available on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, this is one of the best. Now that theyve proven that Morrigan and company can hang in the present, the obvious question for Capcom now is, When do we finally get a new one?

Russell at El33tonline writes: "Darkstalkers has been around for a very long time. In fact, the first instance of the franchise I can find is as far back as 1994. There are games, anime series and comics all dedicated to the franchise and, as such, you can expect that anything new in the series will be very good. Darkstalkers Resurrection is the compilation of two of the previous titles, namely Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. In saying that, however, Darkstalkers Resurrection is much more than a simple compilation and there have been some incredible improvements to the games."

Being a complete stranger to the Darkstalkers series and not exactly being the most adept at beat-em-ups despite my most valiant efforts of executing more than the simplest of Street Fighter combos I was rather unsure as to what I should expect from Darkstalkers Resurrection.
